SAN DIEGO - Sophomore Mikaela Macklin captured the individual title as San Diego defeated the University of San Diego, 56-37, in a pentathlon at the USD sports Center Pool Friday afternoon. Six Aztecs finished among the top 10 swimmers in the final meet standings.

The contest consisted of five events including the 100 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Total times in the five swims determined individual placings with the top six finishers from each school scoring points.

Macklin's combined time of 6:05.70 gave her an eight-second advantage over fellow Aztec Leona Jennings, who won last year's pentathlon between the schools. Jennings total elapsed time was 6:14.04, four seconds better than SDSU freshman Loreen Whitfield (6:18.29), who took third place.

Other top 10 finishers for SDSU included Jessica Crider (7th - 6:25.61), Berklie Oscarson (8th - 6:25.61) and Stephanie Koch (10th -6:28.19).

Macklin's individual pentathlon title was well-earned as she won four events and finished third in the other. She began the afternoon by winning the 100 free in 53.23 and followed that up with a victory in the 100 butterfly (57.22). After a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:00.52), she took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.22) before completing her day with a victory in the 200 individual medley (2:08.51) to claim the title.

Jennings, meanwhile, was victorious in the 100 back (58.15) and captured third in both the 100 fly (57.97) and 100 IM (2:11.42). She placed 10th in both the 100 breast (1:11.85) and the 100 free (54.65).

San Diego State beings its regular dual meet season with contest against mountain West foe UNLV on Saturday, Oct. 8, at noon at the Buchanan Natatorium in Las Vegas.
