EUGENE, Ore. - San Diego State freshman Allison Reaser won the heptathlon at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. With the victory, her third heptathlon win of the season in four tries, Reaser earned the opportunity to represent the U.S. at the 2011 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships from July 23-24 at the Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Fla.
Reaser won the two-day, seven-event heptathlon with 5,359 points, 154 ahead of runner-up Deanna Latham of Wisconsin (5,205). Reaser, who had just an 11-point lead after the first day (four events), won the long jump today, took seventh in the javelin and was third in the 800-meter run. Twenty-three athletes started the heptathlon on Thursday.
"I am excited to win (the heptathlon) at such a big stage," Reaser said. "It will be an honor to represent the United States at the Pan Am games. I wanted to (set a personal record) or come close to it and I accomplished that. I'm happy with my effort."
Reaser began the second day of competition in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 8 ¼ inches. It was just short of her personal-best mark of 19-9 ¾ (No. 7 all-time at SDSU) and earned her 850 points. It was her fourth win of the seven events of the heptathlon (also won 100 hurdles, shot put and 200 on Thursday).
In the javelin, Reaser was seventh with a toss of 111-11. The throw, which got her 555 points, came on her third and final attempt.
Reaser wrapped up the day in the 800, where she took third with a time of 2 minutes, 23.22 seconds. It was her fastest time of the season by more than two seconds (2:25.79 at NCAA Championships) and earned her 780 points.
