Whitney Ashley won the discus throw and Kelsy Hintz captured the pole vault to pace the San Diego State track and field team on the third day of the Mountain West Conference Championships Friday in Fort Collins, Colo.

The Aztecs sit in third place after eight completed events with 45.50 points, trailing Brigham Young (67) and New Mexico (58). Host Colorado State is fourth with 42 points, followed by UNLV (38), Utah (31), TCU (16), Air Force (11.50) and Wyoming (3).

Ashley defeated 18 others in the discus with a throw of 170 feet, 9 inches, just an inch further than runner-up Jessica Sharbono (169-09) of Colorado State. Teammate Jeanette McConnell was third (162-06). Ashley also performed well in the hammer throw for the Aztecs, setting a school record with a toss of 187-06, good enough for a fourth-place finish of 24 starters.

SDSU continued its dominance in the pole vault as Kelsy Hintz won the 17-competitor field, clearing 13-04.50. The win gave San Diego State its 13th pole vault title of a possible 24 (indoor and outdoor) since the MWC began in 2000. Hintz has now cleared 13-00.00 in four consecutive meets. Katie Vo vaulted 12-00.75 to tie with three others for sixth place.

Shanieka Thomas made her season debut in the long jump a good one, taking sixth with a leap of 18-10.50.

Allison Reaser, who yesterday won the heptathlon at the MWC championships, finished ninth in the long jump (18-04.50), but did advance to Saturday's finals in both the 100- (14.01 seconds) and the 400-meter hurdle (1:01.29) events.

Others Aztecs who qualified for Saturday's finals in their respective events include Lawreta Ozoh in the 100 (12.00), Shanae Roach (24.25) and Maderia Toatley (24.32) in the 200, and Josefine Koskinen in the 800 (2:12.09).

Saturday gets underway with the women's javelin and men's shot put, beginning at 10:30 a.m. MT.
