LOS ANGELES/TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman Allison Reaser won the heptathlon at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational to lead the San Diego State track and field team Friday in Los Angeles. Whitney Ashley, meanwhile, led the other group of athletes at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., by setting a school record in the hammer throw.
Reaser, who won the pentathlon at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships last month, finished with 5,361 points to win today's heptathlon over 10 other competitors. The 5,361 points were the seventh-highest total in school history.
Reaser, who beat runner-up Tatum Souza of UCLA by 434 points, won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 1 ¼ inches. She then came back to toss the javelin 108-0. Reaser finished the seven-event, two-day performance in the 800-meter run, clocking a time of 2 minutes, 26.78 seconds.
In Tempe, Ashley bettered her school record in the hammer with a toss of 183-10 to take second in the collegiate/open division. Freshman Ellie Fanaika finished 14th in the same event with the fifth-best throw in program history of 164-07.
In the pole vault, Kelsy Hintz was second, clearing 12-06.00, while Katie Vo tied for fourth at 12-00.00.
The split squads will wrap up competition at their respective places tomorrow.
