PHILADELPHIA - San Diego State freshman Shanieka Thomas finished third at the Penn Relays women's triple jump championship Friday in Philadelphia.

Thomas' third jump of 41 feet, 10 ½ inches was her best and placed her behind LSU All-American Melissa Ogbourne (42-10.75) and Texas A&M's Sasha-Kay Matthias (42-06.25). Thomas defeated five others in the championship flight as her mark of 41-10.50 was her second-best outdoor triple jump of the season.

Yesterday (Thursday) at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, four Aztecs competed in the discus USATF/OTC open finals. Whitney Ashley finished fourth of seven with a toss of 165-09.75, while Jeanette McConnell was fifth in 161-02.75.

Jasmine Burrell, who was competing as an unattached performer, took third with a heave of 174-06.00. Only seasoned veterans Monique Jansen (Netherlands) and Heike Koderisch (Germany) defeated Burrell, whose 174-06.00 is the top junior mark in the country and sixth-best in the world heading into this weekend (according to IAAF.org). SDSU's other competitors, Lima Lefiti, didn't get an official throw in after fouling all six of her attempts as did unattached competitor Brittany Gonter.

The rest of the Aztec track and field team competes at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif., on Saturday and Sunday.
