LA JOLLA, Calif. - Ellie Fanaika and Jeanette McConnell each set season-best marks in their respective events to lead the San Diego State track and field team on the first day of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational Friday in La Jolla.

Fanaika took 21st in the hammer throw invitational with a toss of 165 feet, 10 inches. It bettered her previous best mark of 164-07 and is the fifth-best throw in school history. Aztec volunteer coach Jessica Cosby (Nike) won the 47-competitor event in 228-01.

In the other invitational event on the first day, Whitney Ashley was 21st in the discus with a throw of 147-11.

The majority of the team competes tomorrow, beginning at 11 a.m. PT with the Leon T. Roach Invitational pole vault and the invitational javelin.
