SAN DIEGO - Last Friday, the San Diego State men's tennis team earned its biggest win of the 2011 campaign by upsetting No. 29 San Diego at home, 4-3. It was senior night for the Aztecs, but the absence of senior Tim Schulz van Endert, who flew home to be by his mother's side following her cancer surgery, made the victory feel somewhat incomplete.
With Schulz van Endert now back in San Diego, head coach Gene Carswell made a decision to reach out to Point Loma Nazarene head coach Rich Hills in hopes of squeezing a home match in to the Aztecs' remaining schedule. Hills was sympathetic to the situation and agreed to have his Sea Lions travel to Montezuma Mesa for what will now be SDSU's second, and true, senior day this year.
The newly-added contest, which will be the Aztecs' last regular-season home match of the year, will be held at 1 p.m. PT on Thursday, April 21, at the Aztec Tennis Center. Outgoing seniors who will be celebrated at the event include Andre Feliz (San Gabriel HS), Matthew Tosches (Vista Murrieta HS), Giovanni Vaglietti (Tennessee Tech University) and, of course, Schulz van Endert (Poelchau Oberschule Berlin).
Following last week's defeat of San Diego, the Aztecs are 5-14 on the season but picking up momentum in leaps and bounds. SDSU has won three of its last four matches and is 2-3 in Mountain West Conference play. Following Thursday's match, the Aztecs will head to UNLV on Saturday for their regular-season finale. The match should have seeding implications for the upcoming MWC Championships, held April 27-30 in Fort Collins, Colo.
