WALNUT, Calif. - Sophomore Marianne Hogan ran the fourth-fastest 10,000-meter time in school history to pace the San Diego State track and field team Thursday night on the first day of the 53rd annual Mt. Sac Relays.
Hogan completed the 25-lap race in 35 minutes, 19.90 seconds, to take fifth of 55 in the two Open U/O heats. Hogan's time was 50.04 seconds faster than her previous Aztec best, set on March 26 in a victory at the Cal/Nevada Championships. The time is the fastest by an SDSU runner in 29 years. Only Lynn Kanuka (34:22.24 set in 1981), Liz Baker (34:44.44 set in 1982) and Debra Chaddock (34:55.24 set in 1982) have gone faster.
Alma Escobar also competed in the 10K and ran a season-best time of 36:42.83 to take 35th. It was just over two seconds slower than her fastest time (36:40.15, No. 8 all-time) at San Diego State, set in 2009.
Sara Beyers was the other competitor for the Aztecs on the first day of the prestigious relays. The senior was 24th of 34 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (Open U/O) in 11:17.65, about seven seconds off her fastest time earlier this season (11:10.58, No. 5 all-time).
SDSU is back in action at 9 a.m. PT tomorrow (Friday), beginning with the women's open 1,500.
