CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Marianne Hogan won the 10,000-meter run and junior Whitney Ashley set a school record in the hammer throw to lead the San Diego State track and field team on the first day of the 2011 Cal/Nevada Championships Saturday in Claremont, Calif.

The Aztecs sit in second place after seven events with 50 points, 19 which came from the pole vaulters. Sacramento State leads the 19 other scoring teams with 59.50 points.

"What a great start for the team," head coach Shelia Burrell said. "Marianne Hogan was impressive in her first-ever 10K. We scored in every final, even though we're not competing with our full roster. I'm excited to see what we can do tomorrow."

Hogan won the 10K with a time of 36 minutes, 9.94 seconds. The time, which beat 27 other runners, was the sixth-fastest in school history.

Ashley, meanwhile, finished third in the hammer with a toss of 179 feet, 7 inches. Ashley, competing in the hammer for the first time this season, broke Maria Rodriguez' school-record throw of 170-07, set last year. Freshman Ellie Fanaika, meanwhile, was eighth with a mark of 155-06.

In the pole vault, Kelsy Hintz (second, 12-05.50), Katie Vo (fourth, 12-05.50), Kelsie Jarratt (seventh, 11-11.75) and Moriah Roberge (eighth, 11-11.75) all scored for SDSU.

Junior Julianne Alarcio rounded out the field event scorers with a seventh-place finish in the long jump (18-05.25).

Back on the track, senior Sara Beyers took sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 35.25 seconds.

San Diego State also had five athletes qualify for Sunday's finals in seven events, led by sophomore Lawreta Ozoh. Ozoh took second in the 100-meter preliminary heat in 11.74 seconds, the 10th-fastest time in school history. Ozoh also advanced in the 200 (third, 23.80).

Allison Reaser, the 2011 Mountain West Conference indoor pentathlon champion, took second in both the 100 (13.92) and 400-meter hurdles (1:00.59) to move into Sunday's finals.

Other who qualified for tomorrow's championships include Niki Novak (fifth, 2:15.17) and Amy Brown (seventh, 2:15.64) in the 800, and Kiersten Kirkland in the 400 hurdles (eighth, 1:02.63).
