SAN DIEGO - Junior Whitney Ashley won the shot put to pace the San Diego State track and field team at the Aztec Invitational Saturday at SDSU SportsDeck.
Ashley's toss of 50 feet, 6 inches defeated 28 other competitors and was the third-best mark in school history. Ashley also took second in the discus throw in 162-07, which was No. 6 all-time in Aztec history.
Senior Sara Beyers was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 10.58 seconds (No. 5 at SDSU list), while sophomore Lawreta Ozoh placed second in the 200 in 23.74 (tied for seventh all-time).
Other top-five finishes on the day came from Allison Reaser in the long jump (second, 19-02.00), Kelsy Hintz in the pole vault (third, 13-00.25), Kiersten Kirkland in the 400 hurdles (third, 1:01.44), Jeanette McConnell in the discus throw (third, 157-08), Alex Evans in the triple jump (fourth, 38-07.75), Josefine Koskinen in the 800 (fifth, 2:09.25) and Marianne Hogan in the 5,000 (fifth, 17:28.31).
In relay action, the team of Jessika Hornsby, Maderia Toatley, Shanae Roach and Ozoh took second in the 4x400 (45.87).
San Diego State heads to the Cal/Nevada Championships next weekend in Claremont, Calif.
