MARINA DEL RAY, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team got its spring season started with a series of four races at UCLA Sunday morning on Ballona Creek in Marina del Ray, Calif. Although the defending Bruins, who finished 12th at last year's NCAA Championships, won each event, the Aztecs gave an excellent account of themselves.
SDSU Varsity 8 kicked off the morning races with the Aztecs' fastest time of the day as they crossed the finish line in 6:36.50, some 16 second behind the UCLA boat.
In the second Varsity 8 race, San Diego State finished in 7:11.60 as the Bruin's went 6:27.70 in their second boat with the UCLA Novice 8 clocking a time of 6:48.70.
UCLA also raced two boats against San Diego State in the Varsity 4 event. The Bruins' `A' boat finished in 6:56.60, the `B' crew clocked in at 7:12.90 and San Diego State finished the race in 7:41.30
In the final race, San Diego State posted a mark of 7:49.0 in the Novice 4 competition, finishing just under 22 seconds behind the Bruin entry (7:27.6).
"Our Varsity 8 had a very good race today," commented SDSU Head Coach Jennifer Lewis. "They were consistent on the drive and followed their race plan. We'll look to improve on several aspects of the race plan this week at practice.
"Each of our boats had specific goals to accomplish this week. We have just three practices at home before we're off to race Sacramento State and UC Davis next weekend. That means focus and intensity are imperative for us in our preparations for those races."
