FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Despite participating in only nine of the 15 events, the San Diego State track and field team took second at the Northern Arizona University Lumberjack Invitational Saturday in Flagstaff, Ariz.
In their final tune-up before next weekend's Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Aztecs finished with 102 points, 10 behind 20th-ranked Arizona State. The host Lumberjacks were third with 67 points, followed by Arizona (60), Cal State Bakersfield (23), Grand Canyon (23), UC Riverside (19), Cal State Dominguez Hills (12) and Cal State San Marcos (1).
Freshmen Shanieka Thomas and Niki Novak each won their respective event to lead SDSU. Thomas, who owns the San Diego State class high jump record, won the triple jump with a leap of 41 feet, 9 ¾ inches.
Novak, meanwhile, beat out 10 other competitors to take the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 19.38 seconds.
The Aztecs added seven runner-up finishers on the day, including junior Shanae Roach in both the 60 and 200 meters. Roach, who last week ran the third-fastest 60 (7.42) in school history and the fourth-fastest 200 (23.94), went 7.44 in the 60 and 24.02 on Saturday.
Sophomore Kelsy Hintz led a group of six SDSU pole vaulters in the top 10 with a jump of 12-05.50. Classmate Moriah Roberge set an indoor collegiate best of 12-00.00 and was joined in fourth place by senior Katie Vo (12-00.00).
Freshman Allison Reaser, who will compete in the pentathlon at the MWC meet next weekend, was second in the high jump (5-03.00) and third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.65). Reaser ran even faster in the preliminary heat of the 60 hurdles and her time of 8.55 is the seventh-fastest mark in school history.
Junior Amy Brown, meanwhile, made her season debut with a second-place finish in the 800 (2:20.27) and a fourth-place result in the mile (5:34.75). Junior Josefine Koskinen took second in the mile (5:30.92) in her track and field debut, while sophomore Marianne Hogan (10:32.79) and senior Sara Beyers (11:09.90) went second and third, respectively, in the 3,000 in their first races of the year.
The Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships begin Thursday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
