SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 11 San Diego State kicked off the first day of the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite with two wins on Saturday by taking out Sonoma State 24-3 and host No. 12 UCSB 13-9 at Recreation Center Pool in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Aztecs started the day against Sonoma State by jumping out to a 10-1 first quarter lead and never looked back. Rachel Miller had four goals, Meghann Pederson and Meaghan Poland had three goals apiece and San Diego State held the Seawolves scoreless in the final period to secure the victory.
The second game of the day was a much tighter contest, as No. 12 UCSB showed their home pool advantage early on, matching the Aztecs in the first quarter, 2-2. The game was still close at 8-6 going into the final quarter, but San Diego State scored five goals in the fourth to come away with the win, 13-9. Alex Ford, Amber Pezzolla and Meghan Poland all scored twice to lead the Aztecs on offense.
Sixteen different Aztec's scored at least one goal on Saturday.
The Red and Black will return to action on Sunday to play on the second day of the UCSB Invite at Recreation Center Pool. The Aztecs will square off against No. 7 Michigan at 9:40 a.m. and Concordia at 12:40 p.m.
