BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The 24th-ranked San Diego State swimming and diving team extended its non-conference dual meet win streak to 35 as it defeated Fresno State (178-119), Cal State Bakersfield (213-81) and UC San Diego (183-111) Saturday afternoon at the Hillman Aquatic Center in Bakersfield, Calif. The Aztecs, who won eight of 14 individual events as well as both relays, remain undefeated on the season with a 15-0 record.
SDSU began the meet by capturing the 200 medley relay as the team of Leona Jennings, Katelyn Weddle, Mikaela Macklin and Stephanie Koch clocked 1:46.13, a time that ranks as the eight-best in school history. Three members of that relay squad would also record wins in individual events later in the meet.
Jennings took first in the 100 freestyle in 52.86, and the sophomore would later be a member of the 400 free relay team that had the top time of 3:31.61. Weddle won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.46 with Koch taking top honors in the 500 freestyle with a mark of 5:01.01. In addition, Macklin finished second in the 100 butterfly (58.80).
Other Aztecs first-place finishers included Melanie Garibaldi in the 1000 freestyle (10:19.11), Kelly Marquenie in the 200 freestyle (1:52.78) and Berklie Oscarson in the 200 individual medley (2:04.49).
In the diving events, junior Kristen Meier won both the 1-meter (286.15) and 3-meter (323.75) board competitions. Her score in the 3-meter broke the San Diego State school record of 314.85 that she set last weekend and is the third-highest in the conference this season.
SDSU finished the meet by turning in the fastest time in the 400 meter relay with the foursome of Marquenie, Jessica Crider, Jennings and Jordan Devine went 3:31.61. Crider also contributed a pair of runner-up finishes during the meet as she captured second in both the 200 free (1:53.04) and 500 free (5:02.15).
Up next for San Diego State is a conference showdown with Wyoming in two weeks (Friday, Jan. 28) at noon at the Aztec Aquaplex.
