SDSU-SDCC Postgame Quotes in PDF Format
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher
Opening Statement:
"It was nice that we could finally play the bench for extended minutes, and D.J. (Gay) and Kawhi (Leonard) didn't have to play 30-plus minutes. It was good to reward some of the guys that have worked so hard and are good enough to be out there and help us win. I thought San Diego Christian played extremely hard, and made some shots when they were guarded and made some shots when they weren't guarded. We're pleased to be 6-0. We've now turned the page to start thinking about that next one (Saint Mary's on Wednesday)."
On how SDSU played tonight:
"If we shoot 60 percent and make 14 of our first 16 shots like we did in the second half, we'll win. But you have to have an edge about you and I thought that came and went tonight. There is not much difference between making a play defensively and giving up a basket. That's probably what D.J. is talking about. There were too many times where we looked like we were going to make a play and we didn't. To some extent, you have to say there's another team out there who made a shot or made a play. (San Diego Christian) stepped up and went 9-for-9 from the free-throw line and made 10 (3-pointers). We've been a good 3-point defending team and they made shots on us tonight. They made shots better than anybody we played. How much of that was us or how much of that was them, I don't know. I do think what D.J. was referring to was that little edge of what makes the other team uncomfortable when you do stuff to them. We did not quite to that do the degree you have to do it (to be successful)."
San Diego State Forward Billy White
On grading SDSU's play tonight:
"I'd give us a B. We could have played a little bit harder. We shot a little bit bad and didn't play good enough help defense as we normally do, but we can go back tomorrow, look at film and get ready for the next game on Wednesday."
On the MWC title banner coming down before the game:
"I think it was important to everybody. Last year we faught hard and came together as a team to win some ballgames at the end. In the Mountain West (Championship), we were just playing San Diego State basketball. This year we want to go farther than that. Of course we want to win another banner. It's going to help us push harder."
San Diego State Guard D.J. Gay
On being overmatched against San Diego Christian:
"As a team we wanted to give everybody an opportunity to play equal minutes. Some players haven't played as much as others on the team, so we felt tonight would be a good chance to get others involved that we are going to need down the road for big games. The key today was playing as a team and giving others a chance."
On playing a team who has nothing to lose:
"It's not tough because we have everything to lose and when you have everything to lose you have to go out and perform. Whether it is a team who is ranked or D-II or D-III, you have to go out and play to win."
On grading SDSU's play tonight:
"I'd give us a C-minus. I only say that because we won't beat Saint Mary's the way we played today. The energy will be there on Wednesday. There will be no underestimating or overlooking our opponent or anything of that nature. They're a very good team and that's something that we are all looking forward to."
San Diego Christian Head Coach Conrad Sun
Opening Statement:
"In person, San Diego State is a lot better than what you see when watching them on film. They are a great team with a lot of great athletes, and they can shoot the ball. I have to be honest, Coach Fisher took it easy on us. It's evident. He's very gracious and he took it easy. This game was not as close as the score indicates."
On adjusting to San Diego State's style of play:
"One thing we tried to do is run a lot of motion. We knew that they were long, athletic and that they can get to places, so we wanted to spread the court as much as possible. Running motion allowed us to get us easier looks, but Coach Fisher made an adjustment and his team was a lot better in the second half."
On San Diego State's roster:
"They are loaded. Every one of them stuck out. Even their second unit that came in is no different or worse than the first group. They are definitely a good team. I am excited about San Diego State basketball. I have lived in San Diego for 20 years and I cannot wait to see how far this team goes."
