COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State's Stephanie Koch has been named the Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Week for her performance in last week's Arena Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. She becomes the fifth Aztec to earn the honor this season as SDSU athletes have won the award each of the five weeks that the team has competed.
Koch, a native of Ames, Iowa, set San Diego State records at the Arena Invitational in both the 100-yard freestyle (50.07) and 200-yard freestyle (1:47.93). The sophomore also turned in a time of 23.03 in the 50-yard freestyle, which is the second-best time in Aztec history.
She was also a member of SDSU's five relay teams that all finished sixth or better, including the 400-yard medley relay that posted a school and league-record time of 3:39.28. The Aztecs earned their highest relay finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, coming in third place in a school-record time of 1:31.87.
Koch also swam on the fourth-place 200-yard medley relay (1:40.74), the fifth-place 800-yard freestyle relay (7:25.81) and the sixth-place 400-yard freestyle relay (3:24.19). The times in each of those three relays rank as the second-fastest in the SDSU record book.
Her marks in the 100 and 200 free as well as her relay team marks in the 200 free relay plus the 200 and 400medley relays are all the fastest in the MWC thus far during the 2010-11 season.
All told she helped account for 337 of SDSU's 691 points in the meet (71 in individual events and 2456 in the relays).
Koch joins teammates Leona Jennings, Kelly Marquenie, Brooke Vessy and Katelyn Weddle in capturnign the MWC Swimmer of the week honor this season.
The San Diego State swimming and diving team will next be in action on Saturday, Dec. 4, when it visits Las Vegas for a dual meet against UNLV at 1:00 p.m. at the Rebel's Buchanan Natatorium.
