SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming and diving team has been ranked 23rd in the nation in the first poll of the season released by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America today. It marks the first time that SDSU has been ranked among the top 25.
After four weekends of competition the Aztecs' dual meet record stands at 6-0 and they are 5-0 in Mountain West Conference contests. Included in that record is a win over preseason MWC favorite Brigham Young (173-127).
Those four weekend meets have produced the Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Week with Leona Jennings, Kelly Marquenie Brooke Vessey and Katelyn Weddle garnering the league honor this fall.
SDSU athletes have recorded 11 marks (six swimming, five diving) that rank among the all-time top 10 in school history including a school and conference record in the 1000 freestyle by freshman Kelly Marquenie. The Aztecs have also set eight individual Aztec Aquaplex pool records as well as a pair of relay records for the facility.
San Diego State was among teams receiving votes in the CSCAA poll during the 2009-10 campaign with their highest point total ranking them 33rd last year.
The Aztecs are currently preparing to compete in next week's Arena Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. The three-day meet (Nov. 18-20) is hosted by UC San Diego and will feature athletes from over 20 collegiate teams including national powers Cal, Stanford and UCLA.
