COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior Brooke Vessey has been named the Mountain West Conference swimmer of the week and Aztec junior Kristen Meier has captured the league's diver of the week honor. It marks the first time each athlete has won the award during their SDSU career.
Vessey, a native of Redlands, Calif., won a pair of individual events and was a member of the first-place 200 medley relay team at last weekend's triple dual met against Air Force, Colorado State and New Mexico. She started the meet by swimming the second leg of the 200 medley relay that placed first of 11 total entrants. She then captured first in the 200 fly (of 15 total entrants) in a time of 2:05.99, winning the event by almost four seconds over the second-place finisher (Allison Hall of SDSU in 2:09.88).
Vessey ended her day with a win in the 100 fly in 57.18, winning by almost afull second (second-place time was 58.15). She helped accout for 27 points as SDSU won all three dual meets inclduing a first-ever victory over MWC opponent Colorado State.
Meier, who hails from Walden, N.Y., picked up two third-place finishes on Saturday. The junior's score of 279.80 on the 3-meter springboard ranks as the third-highest score in Aztec history, while her mark of 255.20 on the 1-meter board ranks sixth in program history. It was Meier's first competitive diving meet of the 2010 season and her score in the three-meter event was just 0.20 points shy of qualifying for the Zone Meet.
The San Diego State swimming and diving team resumes action next Thursday, Nov. 4, when it hosts preseason conference favorite Brigham Young for a dual meet scheduled to get underway at 1:00 p.m. (PT) at the Aztec Aquaplex.
