  • San Diego State improved to 45-38-5 all-time in opening contests (20-21-1 in Div. I) ... The Aztecs improved to 61-23-4 all-time in home openers ... SDSU moved to 1-0 all-time against Nicholls State and vs. members of the Southland Conference ... SDSU is 4-0 all-time in games played on Sept. 4, winning the four contests by a combined margin of 160-50 ... The Aztecs are 5-1 in its last six home games against unranked opponents, including 4-1 under Brady Hoke.
  • San Diego State earns its first victory in a season-opening game since the 2004 campaign, snapping a five-game losing streak in season-opening games. Prior to tonight, the Aztecs' last win in a season-opener was six years ago today, when SDSU defeated Idaho State, 38-21.
  • The Aztecs will go to bed tonight with a 1-0 record, marking the first time in 2,164 days that San Diego State owns a winning record in football. Prior to today, the last time SDSU owned a winning record was three games (2-1) into the 2004 campaign. San Diego State improved to 2-1 after beating Nevada, 27-10, on Sept. 25. The Aztecs owned a winning record until Oct. 2, 2004, when they lost at UCLA, 33-10.

TEAM NOTES

  • San Diego State recorded its first shutout in seven years this evening, dating back to a 7-0 blanking of UNLV on Nov. 8, 2003, in Las Vegas ... The last time San Diego State shutout an opponent through three quarters was Nov. 11, 2006, when the Aztecs defeated UNLV 21-7 in San Diego ... The last time San Diego State held an opponent scoreless in the first half of a game was Nov. 10, 2007, when the defense shutout UNLV en route to a 36-30 victory in Las Vegas.
  • SDSU's 47-point margin of victory is its largest since Oct. 11, 1996, when it defeated Hawai'i, 56-8, in San Diego. The margin of victory tonight is the team's biggest in a season-opener since defeating Cal State Los Angeles 49-0 on Sept. 27, 1969.
  • SDSU's 47 points are its most in a game since putting 52 on Portland State in 2007.
  • The last time SDSU had four rushing scores in a game was Oct. 1, 2005, against Brigham Young.
  • San Diego State's 218 team rushing yards are its most in a single game since recording 226 against Colorado State on Oct. 25, 2008 (L, 38-34).
  • On Davon Brown's second career touchdown in the second quarter, SDSU has now scored a touchdown in 39 straight games.
  • SDSU's Logan Ketchum recorded his first career blocked kick on Nicholls' field-goal attempt in the third quarter. The last time the Aztecs blocked a field-goal attempt was Oct. 18, 2008, when Andrew Preston got a hand on a kick at New Mexico.
  • SDSU has tallied 12.0 tackles for loss in consecutive season-openers after also having 12 a year ago at UCLA.

STARTING NOTES

  • Aztec senior running back Davon Brown made his first career start in his 28th career contest. On defense, fellow senior Darryn Lewis made his debut in the starting line-up at one of the warrior positions.

OTHER AZTEC SEASON-OPENING TIDBITS
The Aztecs' four rushing scores are tied for the most in an opening game (Sept. 8, 1991 vs. Long Beach State and Sept. 28, 1969 vs. Cal State Los Angeles) ... The 171 yards allowed are the second fewest allowed in an opening contest ... The 531 total yards are the third most in a SDSU opening game ... DeMarco Sampson's 179 receiving yards are the most ever in an Aztec opener (previous 174 yards by Az Hakim vs. Idaho in 1996).

PLAYER NOTES
Ryan Lindley, Junior QB: Recorded his seventh career 300-yard passing game and with his 341 yards in last year's season finale at UNLV, has recorded back-to-back 300-yard passing efforts for the first time in his career ... With his first touchdown pass of the game, Lindley moved into eighth place by himself in career passing scores in Aztec history.

DeMarco Sampson, Senior WR: Recorded his second career 100-yard receiving game with seven catches for 179 yards ... His 71-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter is the longest reception of his career. His previous long was a 38-yarder at Colorado State in 2009 ... Sampson later caught his second TD of the afternoon, the fourth time in his career that he has had multiple receiving scores in the same game. Sampson has combined for seven receiving touchdowns in the last five SDSU home outings ... Sampson's 179 yards rank 38th all-time in SDSU single-game history.

Davon Brown, Senior RB: Recorded his first multi-TD game of his career with a pair of rushing scores ... Brown's only other career TD came back in 2007 vs. TCU ... Entering tonight's game with 52 rushing yards on 29 attempts, Brown eclipsed his previous career total for yardage with 66 yards on 11 carries in his first career start.

Walter Kazee, Sophomore RB: Averaged 12.3 yards per carry, helped by a 46-yard run ... Kazee finished the game with 74 yards on six carries and his third career touchdown.

Brian Stahovich, Junior P: On his first punt of the season, booted a 56-yarder, his 26th career kick for 50 or more yards.

OTHER NOTES

  • True Aztec freshmen making their debuts this evening included Oceanside High products Jake Fely and Rene Siluano, who both logged minutes on the opening kick-off coverage, defensive lineman Jordan Thomas and running back Ronnie Hillman.
