Marianne Hogan took sixth of 83 runners to lead the San Diego State cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the 66th annual Aztec Invitational Saturday morning at Balboa Park. Hogan's time of 18 minutes, 26.3 seconds is the fastest time by a SDSU runner at the Aztec Invitational since 2005, when Lital Azulay placed ninth in 18:12.

The Aztecs finished sixth of eight in the competitive invitational race, which was won by 20th-ranked Brigham Young with 55 points. Long Beach State took second (61 points), followed by Biola University (64), San Diego (101), Central Arizona (129), San Diego State (152), Northern Arizona (165) and Occidental College (238).

Hogan's time of 18:26.3 was more than 1:12 faster than last year (19:39.0) and more than 43 seconds faster than her previous collegiate best (19:09.8 - Oct. 16, 2009). The time is even more impressive considering Hogan and the lead pack got lost on the course on three occasions.

"For Marianne to stay with the lead pack throughout the race means that she is in great shape and mentally ready to run some impressive races this season," head coach Shelia Burrell said. "She battled injuries last year, but worked hard over the summer and I'm sure her determination will pay off."

Sara Beyers (36th place, 19:30.0), Jordan Davis (46th, 19:50.5) and Alma Escobar (49th, 19:56.4) all placed in the top 50 with sub-20:00 times. Amy Brown (65th, 20:36.1), Sabrina Rathor (70th, 21:00.8) and Missy Bunn (74th, 21:13.4) rounded out the top seven for SDSU, while Hannah Winokur (78th, 21:48.4), Amy Reaser (81st, 23:27.8), Amanda Okun (82nd, 24:26.0) and AnSherae Devine (83rd, 27:42.9) made their Aztec collegiate debut.

"For the most part our women ran solid races today," Burrell added. "I was especially thrilled with `how' we ran today. Most of the returners opened up with times that bettered last year's performance at this meet. With how difficult our course is with the hills, I believe we are moving in the right direction and looking forward to Stanford next week."

San Diego State returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 25) at the Stanford Invitational.
