SAN DIEGO - SDSU's Aztec Aquaplex has once again been selected to host the nation's best women's water polo teams as the University and venue will welcome the NCAA Women's Water Polo National Championship in 2012. The announcement comes after San Diego State played host to the same event earlier this year.
"This is another opportunity to display our great University and tremendous athletic facilities to the nation," said SDSU athletic director Jim Sterk. "Getting the championship back in San Diego so quickly is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers who put on a great event this past May. The San Diego community can expect another outstanding championship in 2012."
From May 11-13, 2012, the nation's top teams will travel to San Diego to compete for the national championship. In May, USC defeated Stanford, 10-9, in a thrilling finish in front of a standing-room-only crowd at the Aquaplex to claim the 2010 title.
"The NCAA Championship returning to SDSU in 2012 is another opportunity to showcase our water polo program and facilities and show that we are among the elite in the nation," said San Diego State women's water polo head coach Carin Crawford. "Having the opportunity to host the 2010 NCAA Water Polo Championship proved to the water polo world that SDSU is capable of putting on a premier event, and I'm excited to have the chance to do it again in 2012."
The San Diego State water polo team finished the 2010 season with a 21-15 record and ended the year ranked ninth in the country. The Aztecs have qualified for two of the previous four NCAA Tournaments.
