SAN DIEGO - Tyrone Shelley, who completed his sophomore year athletically on the men's basketball team this past season, has decided to leave the San Diego State basketball program, Aztec head coach Steve Fisher announced Monday.

Shelley, a 6-6, guard who suffered through an injury plagued season in 2009-10, averaged 6.1 points, 3.5 rebounds in 30 games this past year. The Pepperdine transfer started eight games, all prior to the beginning of Mountain West play, and was seventh on the team in scoring. The San Diego native connected on 43.5 percent of his field-goal attempts, including 16-of-62 from three-point range.

"Tyrone has decided to pursue opportunities at another school," Fisher said. "We appreciate the contributions he made to the team last season and wish him well as he furthers his education and in his basketball pursuits."

Shelley had nine double-digit scoring games for the Aztecs, with six of those coming in the first eight games of the season. He led SDSU in scoring once last season, a 17-point effort in an Aztec victory over UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 5.

San Diego State is scheduled to return all five starters off of a team that finished 25-9, won the Mountain West Conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs finished last season ranked 30th in the final Associated Press poll and ESPN.com's Andy Katz and Pat Forde have placed the Aztecs in their 2010-11 preseason top 25, and Fox Sports' Jeff Goodman has listed San Diego State among the nation's top teams for the upcoming campaign.
