SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior rower Casi Boyle has been named to the all-West Region second team by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). In addition, fellow seniors Jaime Hinton and Christina Mattos have been recognized as CRCA National Scholar-Athletes.
The all-region awards recognize the outstanding performances of rowers and coxswains from each of the five regions, organized into first and second-team selections. Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches' recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Boyle, a four-year letterwinner form Folsom, Calif., was one of only three of the 20 all-West Region honorees from outside the Pac-10.
Hinton (Eugene, Ore.) and Mattos (Livermore, Calif.) were honored for their excellence both as students and athletes. To be considered for the National Scholar-Athlete Award, rowers have to be in at least their second season, compete in at least 75 percent of the team's races and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher for her collegiate career.
All three rowers were members of San Diego State's No. 1 varsity boat during the 2009-10 campaign with Boyle and Mattos on the port side and Hinton on the starboard side. That boat captured dual races against St. Mary's and Loyola Marymount at the NorCal/SoCal Challenge, finished second in the petite final at the San Diego Crew Classic and captured fifth in the grand final at the annual Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) meet.
