AUSTIN, Texas - Stephanie James finished in a tie for 19th in the pole vault to pace San Diego State on the first day of the preliminary rounds of the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas.
James finished in a tie with Montana State's Stacey Irvine and Oregon's Jordan Roskelley as all three cleared 13 feet, 1 ½ inches. The three vaulters, along with Aztecs Kelsy Hintz (T-23rd, 12-09.50) and Katie Morgan (T-39th, no height), however, failed to advance to the final rounds of the championships, which will be held June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.
Meanwhile on the track, SDSU's Josefine Koskinen, Kiersten Kirkland and Nicole Stone all failed to qualify for tomorrow's quarterfinal rounds (top 24 advanced). Koskinen was 36th in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 10.77 seconds) and Kirkland took 38th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.66). Competing in her first race since March 28, Stone finished 40th in the 400 (55.48).
San Diego State will have three competitors participating on Friday, beginning with Jeanette McConnell in the discus at noon CT. Briana Johnson (100 hurdles, 5 p.m. CT) and Shana Watson (long jump, 7 p.m. CT) will also be competing for the Aztecs.
