2010 NCAA San Diego Regional Tournament Information
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State University will welcome 13 teams and 10 individuals to the 2010 NCAA San Diego Regional, slated for May 20-22, at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, Calif., the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee announced Monday afternoon. The Aztecs, who are making their 12th consecutive regional appearance, will be among the field vying for a spot in the NCAA national championships slated for June 1-6 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
"We're very excited and honored to not only earn a bid to the NCAA regionals, but to also play host to such a great event," said Aztec seventh-year head coach Ryan Donovan. "I think our (No. 5) seeding is indicative of our play so far this season, but it will be a highly competitive field and we look forward to utilizing a week of preparation out on the course at Carlton Oaks."
SDSU, ranked as high as 23rd in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, earned the No. 5 seed out of the 13 teams in the San Diego regional. Overall, 81 NCAA Division I schools earned invitations to play in one of the six regional events. The other five regional tournaments will be held concurrently in Alpharetta, Ga. (Georgia Tech host), New Haven, Conn. (Yale), Notre Dame, Ind. (Notre Dame), College Station, Texas (Texas A&M) and Bremerton, Wash. (Washington).
Joining the Aztecs at the par-72, 7,360-yard Carlton Oaks Golf Club will be seven squads ranked in the top 40 nationally with 15 different states represented. The top five teams and the low individual not on an advancing team will move on to nationals from each of the six regionals.
San Diego State is making its' 15th appearance overall in the tournament since the field expanded to include regional competition in 1989. The Aztecs have advanced to the national championships 20 times in school history, including four times (1999, 2003, 2005, 2008) since the regional format made its debut.
Under Donovan, SDSU has logged seven top-five finishes in 2009-10, including victories at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational in November and the Barona Collegiate Cup in March. The Aztecs just missed advancing to the national championships a year ago after placing seventh at the NCAA West Regional in Daly City, Calif.
Teams will play 18 holes (54 total) each of the three days with a practice round on Wednesday, May 19. Live hole-by-hole stats will be available on golfstat.com, as well as goaztecs.com for all three rounds. Admission is free to spectators for all three days of the NCAA San Diego Regional.
