IRVINE, Calif. - Maria Rodriguez set a school record in the hammer throw to lead the San Diego State track and field team in the first day of the Steve Scott Invitational Saturday in Irvine, Calif.
Rodriguez finished second in the event with a toss of 170 feet, 8 inches. The mark broke Kellie Scott's heave of 168-08, which was set during the 1998 season. Coming into the meet, Rodriguez's personal best was 163-01 (2009).
The Aztecs continued their dominance in the pole vault, taking first, second, fourth and fifth on Saturday. Katie Morgan won the event with a vault of 13-04.75. Stephanie James (13-00.75) was second, while Kelsy Hintz (12-04.75) and Katie Vo (11-09.00) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Meanwhile, Kiersten Kirkland set a personal record in the javelin to take sixth with a throw of 116-06 and Alex Evans was ninth in the long jump (17-06.00).
On the track, Sara Beyers was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 40.13 seconds. Alma Escobar (15th, 18:38.68) and Jordan Davis (24th, 19:22.76) each competed in the 5,000.
SDSU will wrap up its participation in the Steve Scott Invitational on Sunday.
