PHILADELPHIA - The San Diego State crew team's two boats finished with mixed results at the annual Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuykill River near Philadelphia on Saturday. The Aztec Varsity Eight just missed qualifying for the finals while the Junior Varsity Eight entry advanced to the final where it finished fifth.
The event is the largest collegiate regatta in the country with over 100 colleges and universities from the U.S. and Canada competing over two days. Both of the SDSU boats had made it to Saturday's semifinals by placing among the top entries in the preliminary heats held on Friday.
San Diego State's entry in the Junior Varsity Eight category finished third in the first of two semifinal heats to move on to the final for the Coleman D. Boylan Trophy. The Aztec crew of Vanessa Jones (coxswain), Michelle Boyer (stroke), Julie Moyer (seven), Mallory Scarpello (six), Alyson Boyd (five), Ali Schroeder (four), Jessica Teora (three), Kayla McKenna (two) and Darian Kimball (bow) finished behind Buffalo and Drexel in its heat.
The Aztecs went on to finish fifth of six entries in the final with a time of 8:34.195. The trophy was claimed by Buffalo, which finished the course in 8:01.583.
SDSU's Varsity Eight boat captured third place in one of three semifinal heats, but only the top two finishers in each heat moved on to the afternoon final. The Aztecs finished behind Purdue (6:52.211) and St. Joseph's (6:58.625) with a time of 7:06.919.
San Diego State's Varsity Eight crew included Tanya Ochoa (coxswain), Casi Boyle (stroke), Jaime Hinton (seven), Anna Ohrstrom (six), Stefanie Krach (five), Paige Funk (four), Kristin Guissanie (three), Lily Kurkjian (two) and Lauren Bischoff (bow).
The Dad Vial Regatta marked the final race of the year for the SDSU rowing team as it has completed its 2009-10 schedule.
