LOS ANGELES - Freshman Kiersten Kirkland won the heptathlon to lead the San Diego State track and field team at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational Friday on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles.
Kirkland placed in the top-five in all three Friday events to amass 4,949 points, 176 points ahead of second-place Naima Goodwin of Sacramento State. Kirkland, who was down by 50 points to UCLA's Ryan Krais after four events on Thursday, took third in the long jump (17 feet, 8 ¾ inches), fifth in the javelin (110-10) and third in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 26.75 seconds). Heading into the weekend, only 13 athletes in the nation had scored higher than Kirkland's 4,949 points.
Alicia King claimed the 100-meter dash open with a SDSU season-best time of 12.08. The time was just 0.10 seconds off her personal-best clocking of 11.98, set during 2008 outdoor campaign.
