WALNUT, Calif./LONG BEACH, Calif. - Jessika Hornsby and Alex Evans each finished in the top-10 in their respective event at the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays and the rest of the team competed at the Beach Invitational to pace the San Diego State track and field team on Saturday.
Hornsby finished eighth in the 100-meter dash (Olympic Development University/Open) in a season-best time of 12.14 seconds. Evans, meanwhile, took ninth in the triple jump (Invitational University/Open) with a leap of 39 feet, 10 ¾ inches.
At the Beach Invitational, which was held at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif., Jeanette McConnell led the way with a toss of 157-10 in the discus, just an inch off her personal-best mark. The heave was good enough for third place.
Alma Escobar, Josefine Koskinen and Briana Johnson also stood out for the Aztecs. Two days after running a grueling 10K at Mt. Sac, Escobar finished seventh in the 5,000 meters in a time of 18:37.44. Koskinen, meanwhile, recovered from a slower-than-expected 800 at Mt. Sac the day before to take 17th in the 1,500 in 4:37.11, the fastest time by an SDSU athlete this season. A day after posting her best time of the season in the 100-meter hurdles, Johnson came back within 0.07 of yesterday's time to place fourth in 13.94.
Sara Beyers made her debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, setting a San Diego State season-best time of 12:19.85, while Shana Watson's long jump of 18-05.25 was good enough for fifth.
The Aztecs will be back in action on Friday (April 23) and Saturday (April 24) at the UCSD Triton Invitational.
