COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State women's tennis junior Julia Trunk has been named Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday. Her first career weekly award comes on the heels of Trunk's perfect 4-0 performance in wins over nationally ranked TCU and New Mexico.
A native of Bad Saulgau, Germany, Trunk started her week by teaming with Julia Wais and the duo beat the Horned Frogs' No. 2 doubles team of Nina Munch-Soegaard and Maria Babanova, 8-4. Later in singles, Trunk took her normal spot at the top of the order and defeated No. 63 Munch-Soegaard, 6-2, 7-5, to help lead the Aztecs to an important 4-3 victory over first-place TCU. The win marked her team-leading third over a nationally ranked player this season.
A day later vs. New Mexico, Trunk matched her production from the day before as she posted a 2-0 record for the second consecutive outing. The junior and Wais, together, took down the Lobo pairing of Michaela Oldani and Amy Shipperd, 8-5. Their third straight victory completed a clean sweep of doubles for SDSU. Then in singles, Trunk continued her solid play by beating Anya Villanueva in three sets at the top spot, 6-2, 6-7, 10-5, to complete her perfect weekend.
Trunk, who shared the weekly honor with UNLV junior Jana Albers, is the second Aztec to win the league's weekly award this season, joining Roxanne Ellison, who was recognized for the first time of her career back on March 17.
