Day One Results

LOS ANGELES - Stephanie James cleared an NCAA-best mark of 14 feet, 3 ¼ inches in the pole vault to lead the San Diego State track and field team on the first day of the Cal-Nevada Championships Saturday on the campus of UCLA. Three others scored in the event for the Aztecs, who are in third place with 31 points after day one. Cal State Northridge leads the 32-team meet with 62 points, while Cal State Fullerton (32), SDSU (31), UCLA (24) and UC San Diego (18) round out the top five.

James' vault of 14-03.25 was just ¼ inch short of her school record of 14-03.50, set in the 2008 season. The mark leads Melissa Gergel (14-01.25) of Oregon and Stanford's Katerina Stefanidi (14-01.25) by a full two inches, according to the website TFRRS.org.

Katie Morgan and Kelsy Hintz finished second and third in pole vault, respectively, with San Diego State all-time top-10 performances. Morgan vaulted 13-07.25, which ranks fourth in school history and in a tie for eighth in the nation, according to TFRRS.org. Hintz, meanwhile, cleared 13-01.50, a collegiate one-foot outdoor personal best and the eighth-best mark in program history.

Katie Vo also scored in the pole vault for the Aztecs, tying for seventh at 12-01.50, while Shana Watson was sixth in the long jump (18-04.50) and Alma Escobar took eighth in her 10,000-meter season-debut (38 minutes, 21.87 seconds).

Jessika Hornsby (200 - 24.82), Josefine Koskinen (800 - 2:12.86) and Kierstan Kirkland (400 hurdles - 1:01.42) all qualified for Sunday's final with season-best marks in their respective event, while Nicole Stone, who had the nation's best time in the 400 of 53.30 heading into the weekend, eased to tomorrow's final with a time of 54.83. Sara Beyers set a collegiate best time of 18:34.91 in the 5,000.

Competition in the Cal-Nevada Championships at UCLA's Drake Stadium concludes tomorrow.
