LOS ANGELES - Stephanie James and Nicole Stone each won their respective event in convincing fashion to lead the San Diego State track and field team Saturday at the non-scoring USC Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles.

James, a two-time All-American who competed in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend, made her outdoor debut by taking first in the pole vault with a jump of 14 feet, 0 inches. No other athlete has gone higher heading into this weekend, according to the website TFRRS.org.

James was followed by Katie Morgan, who had the best mark in the nation heading into the weekend at 13-1 ½ set at the Aztec Track and Field Classic on March 12. Morgan was second today with a mark of 12-9 ½.

Stone, meanwhile, continued her undefeated streak in the outdoor 400-meter dash, taking first with a season-best time of 53.30 seconds. The first-place finish today was 0.63 seconds faster than her collegiate-leading 53.93 set last weekend at the Aztec Track and Field Classic, according to TFRRS.org. Stone, who was named the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, also took seventh in the 200 in 24.45.

Maria Rodriguez set a personal best in the hammer throw in her second-place finish (162-2) and fifth-best mark in school history. She also won the Section `B' of the shot put with a throw of 42 11 ½.

Thoraya Maronsey won the Section `B' of the triple jump with a leap of 38-11, improving her season-best mark (37-3 ¼) set last week by 1 feet, 7 ¾ inches.

Kai Wheeler (200 - 24.91), Michelle Martinez (1,500 - 4:39.70), Sara Beyers (3,000 - 10:38.50), and Kierstan Kirkland (100 hurdles - 14.52) all set significant collegiate-best marks in their respective event, while Alex Evans' outdoor triple jump debut of 39-10 ¾ just missed the Aztec top-10 list.
