ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The San Diego State track and field team completed day one of the 2010 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Thursday in Albuquerque, N.M.
Kierstan Kirkland, Julianne Alarcio and Kelsey Kaster finished 10th, 13th and 14th, respectively, in the pentathlon for the Aztecs. Kirkland finished with 3,211 points, just 177 behind eighth-place scorer Britney Jackson of Wyoming. Kirkland was one place and 26 points better than last year's top finisher for SDSU, Shana Watson. Alarcio had 2,772 points, while Kaster set a personal best with 2,641 points.
The five-event competition began with the 60-meter hurdles, where Kirkland was fourth in 8.93 seconds. Alarcio (9.73) and Kaster (10.20) followed in 12th and 13th.
Kaster put together the best high jump for SDSU when she cleared 4 feet, 10.50 inches, an indoor personal record, while Alarcio and Kirkland each jumped 4-07.00.
Staying with the field events, Kirkland led the San Diego State contingent in the shot put with a toss of 33-10.00, good enough for fifth place. Kaster set an indoor collegiate best of 28-05.50, while Alarcio put together a toss of 25-09.25.
In the long jump, Alarcio set an indoor best with a leap of 17-08.00, which put her in fifth for the event. Kirkland also set an indoor personal record (17-02.25) and was seventh, while Kaster jumped 13-09.00.
In the final event, Kirkland finished 11th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:37.84. Kaster (2:41.08) and Alarcio (2:52.08) were 13th and 14th, respectively.
The MWC championships continue Friday with the trials and finals of the weight throw, beginning at 1 p.m. MT.
