San Diego State's four-game winning streak came to end Saturday afternoon in an 85-83 loss at Wyoming. The Aztecs, playing without leading scorer Billy White due to a high ankle sprain suffered in the first half of the New Mexico game, led by as many as 17 points and had a 14-point advantage with 4:50 to play, but could not hold on for the win. The loss snapped several significant winning streaks, including a 65-game winning streak when ahead with five minutes to play, a 32-game winning streak when shooting 50 percent or better from the field, a 19-game winning streak when scoring at least 80 points and a 13-game winning streak when ahead at the half.
Freshman forward Kawhi Leonard posted his sixth double-double of the season with a career-high 25 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Chase Tapley matched his career high with 17 points and four rebounds, while junior forward Malcolm Thomas scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and added four assists.
San Diego State shot 55.4 percent from the field and owned a 37-24 rebound margin, but could not overcome 19 turnovers, 15 of which came in the second half.
The Aztecs have gone 27 consecutive games without losing two games in a row. During that span, San Diego State has responded from its last six losses with victories, with an average margin of victory of 20.0 points during that span. SDSU is 10-1 in its last 11 games following a loss.
UNLV is coming off a double-digit road victory over 15th-ranked New Mexico, 74-62. The Rebels have won 11 consecutive regular-season games at Thomas & Mack Center, dating back to San Diego State's 68-66 overtime victory on Feb. 3, 2008. In fact, since Dec. 17, 2008, UNLV is 17-0 against all other opponents in the building and 0-2 versus SDSU (the Aztecs also defeated UNLV in the conference tournament, 71-57, on March 12, 2009).
UNLV leads the series 31-15, which dates back to 1966. However, the Aztecs have tied a series best having won three straight times and have been victorious in seven of the last 10 encounters. SDSU is 6-18 all-time at UNLV, but has won two straight and on four of its last six visits to play the Rebels.
