SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State swimming team set three school records and 11 facility marks as it picked up three wins in a five-team event at the Aztec Aquaplex Friday afternoon. SDSU recorded dual meet victories over conference foe TCU (162-130), Idaho (182.5-103.5) and UC San Diego (184-94) to improve to 5-1 (3-1 MWC) on the season.
The Aztecs captured first place in 11 of the 14 swimming races on the day and won their three duals despite having no divers compete in either the one-meter or three-meter events.
Senior Petra Radovic set a pair of San Diego State records as she went 10:10.17 in the 1000 free followed by a 4:55.66 in the 500 free. She was also a member of the 400 free relay quartet that turned in the fastest time in that event at 3:30.36, the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Also setting a new school mark was freshman Meghan Zimmer, whose time of 1:50.49 in the 200 free eclipsed the previous record by half a second. She also captured top honors in the 200 back in a pool record time of 2:01.87.
Another freshman, Leona Jennings, won three individual events and was also on the winning 200 medley relay squad along with Katelyn Weddle, Jaime Vessey and her sister Emilee Jennings. Their time of 1:45.74 was an Aquaplex record as well as the second fastest time ever posted by an Aztec foursome in that event.
Individually, Leona took first in the 100 backstroke (56.41), 100 freestyle (52.23) and 200 individual medley while establishing pool records in each of those races.
Weddle, another freshman in her first season as an Aztec, was SDSU's other individual double winner as she was victorious in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke with time of 1:03.75 and 2:19.16, adding her name to the list of new Aztec Aquaplex record holders.
Up next for the San Diego State swimmers is a trip to Long Beach in two weeks to compete in the Nike Cup over a three-day span (Nov., 19-21). The Aztec divers will participate in the Wildcat diving Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., from Nov, 20-22.
