SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Juan Gomez advanced to the round of 64 at the 2009 D'Novo/ITA Men's All-American pre-qualifying event in Tulsa, Okla.
Gomez, seeded fourth in the event, earned a bye in the round of 256 and recorded a straight-set victory over Illinois State's Timon Reichelt, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 128. The Aztec senior will meet Jadon Philips of New Mexico tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. CT.
Two other San Diego State players in the event suffered losses on the first day.
Junior Giovanni Vaglietti, seeded 25th in the event, dropped a three-set match to Texas A&M's John Lewis, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 10-4. Vaglietti received a bye into the round of 128 before losing the three-set heartbreaker.
Freshman Jose Sierra Short, won his first match over Benjamin Bouhana of New Orleans, before falling to 12th-seeded Alberto Gonzalez of Kentucky, 6-2, 6-2.
Pre-qualifying in the first grand slam event of the men's collegiate season continues tomorrow.
