MALIBU, Calif. - Juniors Achim Ceban (Moscow, Russia) and Juan Gomez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) each won two matches, advancing to the quarterfinals in the process, to lead the San Diego State men's tennis team at the Wilson ITA West/South Regionals Saturday in Malibu, Calif.
Ceban defeated Alexander Sonesson of Cal Poly, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 32 before dispatching seventh-seeded N. Meister of UCLA, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 16. Gomez picked up wins over Shimpei Suzuki of UC Irvine (6-2, 7-6) and Ivan Lopez (6-3, 3-0) from Loyola Marymount.
Two other Aztecs - Andre Feliz (San Gabriel, Calif) and Jose Sierra Short (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) - lost their round of 32 matches and were eliminated. Feliz fell to USD's Nikola Bubnic, 7-5, 6-0, while Short dropped a 6-4, 6-3, match to Andres Arango of Arizona.
Ceban and Gomez will each play in quarterfinal matches tomorrow, which will begin shortly after the 10 a.m. doubles semifinals finishes.
