TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - San Diego State men's soccer player Raymundo Reza (Denver, Colo.) has been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week ending on Sept. 27. A junior, Reza led SDSU (3-2-2) to two victories and the Nike Aztec Classic title.
On Friday, Reza scored two goals and assisted on another as the Aztecs defeated UC Santa Barbara, 4-2. The victory over the Gauchos (6-2-1), who won the national championship in 2006 and came into the weekend ranked sixth in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer, No. 7 by NSCAA, No. 9 by Soccer Times, No. 11 by Soccer America and No. 13 by College Soccer News, was San Diego State's fifth against a top-10 team since it joined the Pac-10 in 2005.
Reza scored SDSU's first goal in the 22nd minute, assisted on redshirt senior Jamel Wallace's (San Diego/Oceanside HS) tally in the 32nd minute, then scored the game-winner in the 61st minute. He had a game-high four shots, including three on net, and played 77 minutes.
On Sunday, Reza had one shot attempt in 70 minutes in the Aztecs' 1-0 win over Princeton. He helped San Diego State stretch its unbeaten streak to five matches and win the Nike Aztec Classic title, a four-team tourney that featured two nationally ranked schools and another with national votes. Reza was named to the all-tournament team.
SDSU rides the momentum of its five-game unbeaten streak into the Pac-10 season, which begins Friday at Washington (7:30 p.m. PT).
