PALO ALTO, Calif. - San Diego State junior Rachel Williams was the lone Aztec to compete at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford University late Saturday night. The NCAA West Regional qualifier in the 5,000 meters came up just short in her bid to qualify for nationals in the 10,000-meter run against an elite field.
Williams finished the Kim McDonald race in 36 minutes, 8.77 seconds to finish in 15th place overall and eighth among NCAA Division I athletes. Her effort, additionally, was a San Diego State personal record.
The Aztecs continue their busy weekend on Sunday as they finish competition in Irvine, Calif., at the Steve Scott Invitational. To date, the Steve Scott Invite is the last meet prior to traveling to Laramie, Wyo., for the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships, which begins May 13.
