WALNUT, Calif. - San Diego State sophomore Alma Escobar took to the track Thursday night and set a personal record in the 10,000-meter run under the lights at Hilmer Lodger Stadium and the Mt. SAC Relays.
Escobar finished in 13th place and in the upper half of the 28-person field with her 36 minute, 40.15 second performance. The Corona, Calif., native erased her old personal record by almost three minutes. Earlier this season on March 29 at the Cal-Nevada Championships, Escobar crossed the finish line in 39:35.15.
With her lifetime-best effort, Escobar lands on the all-time SDSU outdoor performance list at No. 6. The last time an Aztec earned a spot in the 10,000-meter top 10 was in 1998 when Michele Cox posted a time of 38:08.18, which was good enough for ninth in school history at the time. As a result of Escobar's showing, Cox moves down to 10th on the list.
More Mt. SAC action is slated to begin on Friday in Walnut "Where the World's Best Athletes Compete."
