AZUSA, Calif. - San Diego State freshman Sheehan Mitchell vaulted four places to finish in 21st place at the California Invitational Heptathlon, which is being held in conjunction with the 51st annual Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday at Azusa Pacific University. Mitchell earned 4,103 points and was followed by Julianne Alarcio with 3,940 points (25th place) and Kelsey Kaster (3,687 points, 29th).
In the first event of the day, the long jump, both Alarcio and Mitchell finished in the top 10. Alarcio's jump of 17 feet, 6.25 inches earned her a second-place finish, while Mitchell had the seventh-best jump of the day and set a personal record by jumping 16 feet, 3.25 inches. Kaster recorded a jump of 14 feet, 5.25 inches.
In the javelin, Mitchell set her second personal record of the day with a throw of 96 feet, 6 inches. Kaster's throw travelled 75 feet, 9 inches, and Alarcio rounded out the Aztec scoring with a throw of 72 feet.
The day's events ended on the track with the 800-meter run. Mitchell crossed the finish line in fourth place with a time of 2:26.64, coming .10 seconds short of her third PR of the day. Mitchell was followed closely by Kaster, who earned a sixth-place finish with a personal-best time of 2:29.58. Alarcio set a PR as well, completing the race in 2:39.70.
