LOS ANGELES - The San Diego State track and field team moved up one spot from the day before and finished in second place at the Cal-Nevada Championships held at Drake Stadium on the campus of UCLA. The Aztecs earned 84 points and finished behind only the Bruins.
"I was really pleased with how we competed this weekend," interim co-head coach Jennifer Nanista said. "It was a solid performance by the team considering the absence of key point scorers."
Jeanette McConnell became the sixth Aztec of the young outdoor campaign to qualify for the NCAA West Regionals after she finished as the runner up in the discus throw with a personal-record toss of 155 feet, 3 inches.
Karoline Koehler experienced the same fate as McConnell as she came in second place in the finals of the 100-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 11.68. In the 200, she finished in fifth with a mark of 24.24. Both times were seasonal bests.
One day after running a season best and becoming the collegiate leader in the 400, Nicole Stone returned to the track for the 400 finals and came in second with a 2009-best time of 53.66. She currently owns the second-best time in NCAA Division I.
Briana Johnson, meanwhile, was the fourth Aztec to finish in second place on the day as she was the runner up in the 100-meter hurdles. The Orlando, Fla., native, who has already qualified for regionals, ran a personal-record 13.67.
In the finals of the triple jump, Kai Wheeler was the Aztecs' top performer on this day as she logged a personal record while coming in fourth place. The local product from Rancho Bernardo High leaped 39-10.00.
Other SDSU athletes to produce season best times include Michelle Martinez (4:46.66) and Amy Brown (4:47.13) in the 1,500 and the 4x100 relay team of Alicia King, Jessika Hornsby, Johnson and Koehler (46.49).
San Diego State returns to the track April 4 when it competes at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
