SAN DIEGO - The No. 5 San Diego State water polo team split Saturday action at the Aztec Aquaplex. The Aztecs fell during the morning Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match-up with ninth-ranked San Jose State, 10-9, but rebounded for a victory in the afternoon contest against Pacific, 14-8. With the split, the Scarlet and Black's record improves to 18-5 on the season.
In the morning match against the Spartans, senior co-captain Jenna Schuster and junior Melissa de Jonckheere each found the back of the net twice. Seniors Anna Gonzales and Erinn Greenwood, junior Ronni Gautschi and freshmen Leanne Ford and Kimmy Keach, each provided one goal. Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Campoli recorded five saves in the Aztecs loss to San Jose State. With the loss, San Diego State falls to 0-3 in MPSF action, while SJSU improves to 10-7 overall, 2-4 MPSF.
In the afternoon session against the Tigers, Gonzales led the Aztec attack with three goals, while Gautschi, sophomore Brooke Vessey and freshman Hilary Whelan each notched two tallies. Greenwood and classmate Erin Lester, junior Danielle Pelke and freshmen Alana Burgess and Meaghann Pedersen each added one score. Senior Katie Bentley held down the defensive effort in front of the cage.
San Diego State will return to the Aztec Aquaplex again tomorrow to complete day two of the Aztec Invitational. SDSU is slated to take on Brown at 9:15 a.m. PT before taking on Indiana at 1:45 p.m. For complete tournament results, check out the Aztec Invitational web site.
