SAN DIEGO - San Diego State completed a successful second day at the 31st annual Aztec Track and Field Classic on Friday at the SDSU Sports Deck. SDSU won six events on day two and won 11 overall during the weekend in its only home meet of the 2009 season.
SDSU posted two top-three finishes in the long jump invitational. Kai Wheeler won the event with a leap of 18 feet, 3.75 inches. Just behind Wheeler was Thoraya Maronsey with a jump of 17 feet, 6.25 inches, good enough for third place. In the long jump open contest, Julianne Alarcio won the open event with a jump of 17 feet, 10.25 inches. Amber Waddell took the third spot with a 16 feet, 2.50 inch effort. Sheehan Mitchell (7th - 15 feet, 3/4 inch), Kelsey Kaster (8th - 14 feet, 10.75 inches) and Sonya Schmidt (10th - 14 feet, 7 inches) also had impressive performances. Maronsey (2nd - 38 feet, 7.75 inches), Wheeler (3rd - 37 feet, 10.75) and Alarcio (6th - 35 feet, 9.25) also competed in the triple jump invite.
Five different Aztecs posted solid performances in the shot put invite. Lead the charge was Leanne Taylor who won the event with a throw of 45 feet, 3 inches. Laura Boggelin took third place after posting a mark of 42 feet, 11.75 inches, while Jeanette McConnell placed right behind her in fourth place with a throw of 42 feet, 8.75 inches. Maria Rodriguez (8th - 39 feet, 3 inches) and Andrea Martinez (13th - 35 feet, 3.25 inches) also posted solid efforts for the Scarlet and Black.
San Diego State took first place in the javelin throw invite after Michele Dannhausen took the top spot with a throw of 139-06. Odalmis Moreira finished fourth (114-01), while Mitchell (93-01), Danielle Lenore (88-08) and Kaster (87-06) finished ninth through 11th. Alarcio wrapped up the Aztecs competing, as she placed 15th after a throw of 77-01.
Rachel Williams took home the top spot in the 5,000-meter invite run after crossing the line in a time of 17 minutes, 20.04 seconds. Kristin Glen followed closely, finishing in fourth place with a time of 17:47.77. Alma Escobar took ninth place (18:26.69), while Michelle Martinez (11th - 18:28.12) and Lyndsi Riley (12th - 18:54.61) followed closely. Rounding out the competitors for the Scarlet and Black were Makenzie Mabry (16th - 19:30.29), Alyssa Robinson (18th - 19:49.37) and Lindsey Barajas (20th - 20:28.85).
The Aztecs had five jumpers compete in the high jump invite event. Taking third place was Mitchell (5 feet, 3.75 inches), followed by Natalie Peterson in seventh place (4 feet, 11.75 inches). Alarcio, Dannhausen and Kaster rounded out the top-10 finishers as all three tied for the 10th spot after clearing 4 feet, 7.75 inches. Alarcio cleared 4 feet, 7.75 inches to take 10th place.
In the 100-meter hurdles invite, Briana Johnson took the third spot with a time of 13.90 seconds. Annimari Korte (14.20) and Alarcio (15.68) placed fifth and 13th, respectively. In the 100-meter hurdles open, Alarcio crossed the line in 16.15 to place 12th, while Mitchell (13th - 16.56) and Kaster (17th - 17.55) followed closely. In the 400-meter hurdles open event, Kelsee Ramsey came in third after posting a time of 1:08.75.
San Diego State also had five athletes compete in the 200-meter dash open event. Alicia King took the top spot after crossing the finish line in 24.94 seconds. Wheeler came in just behind her in fifth place with a time of 26.11. Alarcio (16th - 27.78), Schmidt (17th - 27.93) and Kaster (19th - 28.26) all placed in the top-20. in the 200-meter dash invite contest, Alicia Lowrey took the third spot with a time of 25.17.
Five Aztecs would place in the hammer throw invite including a fifth place finish by Martinez, with a distance of 166.09. Tamara McMillan posted a distance of 162.01 to come in sixth. Other Aztecs to place were McConnell (10th - 145.04), Rodriguez (12th - 141.00) and Robyn Guzman (15th - 121.05).
San Diego State would also have nine competitors in the discus throw invite, including a second place showing by Taylor (154-03). Dannhausen (151-10) and McConnell (151-03) would place fourth and fifth, while the Aztecs would also take places 10-15 with Guzman (124-00), McMillan (120-05), Martinez (119-10), Lenore (118-11), Rodriguez (118-08) and Boggelin (105-01) taking those spots.
A pair of SDSU athletes also posed solid performances in the 100-meter invite. King took finished fourth overall in the 100-meter invite after crossing the finish line in a time of 12.28, while Wheeler finished in 10th place after posting a time of 12.68 seconds.
Other Aztecs to post solid performances were Darien Buc in the 1,500-meter run invite (2nd - 4:44.34), Amy Brown in the 800-meter run invite (3rd- 2:17.10) and Lowrey 200-meter dash invite (3rd - 25.17). Also competing for the Scarlet and Black were Katie Vo in the pole vault invite (8th - 11 feet, 25 inches) and Schmidt in the 400-meter dash invite (11th - 1:02.73).
The Aztecs return to action next Saturday, March 21, when they travel to the Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles, Calif.
