SAN DIEGO - San Diego State completed a successful day at the 31st annual Aztec Track and Field Classic on Friday at the SDSU Sports Deck. SDSU won three events in its only home meet of the 2009 season.
Darien Buc won the 800-meter run for the second consecutive year with a time of 2 minutes, 18.39 seconds, while her teammates also placed in the top-10. Leigh Rutherford clocked in at 2:26.44 to place fifth. Sheehan Mitchell (2:28.55) and Bianca Saad (2:30.01) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, while Jamie Ferguson (2:32.12) finished in 10th-place. All five athletes improved upon their best times in the event.
The 3,000-meter steeplechase was won by Kristin Glen in a time of 11 minutes, 24.79 seconds. Makenzie Mabry finished just behind Glen in eighth-place (12:09.09). This marks the first time both athletes have competed in the event in 2009.
An Aztec also took the top spot in the 100-meter dash. Alicia King won the open event in a time of 12:18 and was one of three to finish in the top seven of the race. Kai Wheeler came in right behind King to finish second in the event after clocking a time of 12:70 and Tierra Hunt crossed the finish line in 13:33 to place seventh.
The 1,500-meter open run featured a pair of Aztecs finishing in the top-five as Amy Brown captured second place with a time of 4:55.19, establishing a personal best in the event. Sara Beyers came in fifth-place, who finished in a time of 5 minutes, 4.88 seconds and improved upon a top team time.
A pair of SDSU athletes also posted solid performances in the 400-meter open dash. Shana Soloman finished in fourth place with a time of 1:00.98, while Sonya Schmidt came in 11th overall after posting a time of 1:04.52.
Another Aztec to post a solid performance was Alex Colvin in the open pole vault (8th - personal-best 10-0.00).
