Aztecs To Have Four-Match Week
The San Diego State men's tennis team will play host to four teams this week at the Aztec Tennis Center. First up for SDSU will be Georgia State on March 12 at 2p.m. PT, followed by Texas Tech on March 13, also at 2 p.m. PT. On Sunday, March 15, the Aztecs will have a doubleheader beginning with Minnesota at 10 a.m. PT, while Nevada will close out the weekend at 3 p.m. PT.
Scouting The Panthers
Georgia State is coming of a 5-2 loss to Central Florida on March 8. With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 0-13 on the season. Jarod Camerota is in his second year at the helm of the tennis squad.
Series History vs. Georgia State
w There is no record of San Diego State facing Georgia State since records have been kept, beginning in 1989. The Aztecs are 2-3 against Colonial Athletic Association teams.
Scouting The Red Raiders
Texas Tech (7-3) is fresh off a title win at the HEB Tournament of Champions Classic, hosted by Texas A&M. No. 30 Texas Tech boasts one ranked singles player and one ranked doubles team. Freshman Raony Carvalho is the Red Raiders' only ranked singles player at No. 45. Carvalho and senior Christian Rojmar make up the No. 10 doubles team. Tim Siegel is in his 15th season as the head coach of the tennis team.
Series History vs. Texas Tech
SDSU has four wins in the five all-time meetings between the two schools. The most recent match between the two came in 2000 when San Diego State was able to pick up a 5-2 win.
Scouting The Gophers
Minnesota is coming off a 5-2 loss against Washington in Seattle. With the loss, the Gophers dropped to 10-2 for the season. No. 27 Minnestoa has one ranked singles player and two ranked doubles teams. Fresham Ishay Hadash is beginning his collegiate career ranked at No. 48. Also ranked 48th is the doubles team of Tobias Wernet and Michael Sicora. The doubles team of Hadash and Phillip Arndt is ranked at No. 80. Geoff Young is in his third season leading the Gophers.
Series History vs. Minnesota
SDSU claimed the victory in the only match-up between the two schools. Last season the Aztecs traveled to Minnesota where they picked up the 5-2 decision.
Scouting The Wolf Pack
Nevada is coming off a 7-0 sweep of UC Davis. With the victory, the Wolf Pack improves its season record to 5-2. Chad Stoloff is in his fourth season leading the team.
Series History vs. Nevada
The Aztecs have taken four out of the five matches in the all-time meetings between the two institutions. The last time the schools met was in 2001 when SDSU swept the Wolf Pack, 7-0.
Aztecs In The Polls
San Diego State is currently ranked 44th in the nation, according to the first FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings released March 10 by the Intercollegiate Collegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Coaches
Gene Carswell is in his 11th season at San Diego State and sixth as head coach of the Scarlet and Black. In his six seasons at the helm, the Aztecs' mentor has compiled an overall record of 77-48 (.628), while guiding SDSU to three straight Mountain West Conference regular-season titles from 2005-2007. During that stretch, the native San Diegan led the Aztecs to a 17-0 league mark en route to earning three consecutive MWC coach of the year accolades. Prior to his present duties, Carswell was an Aztec assistant for five years from 1998-2003, earning a pair of ITA regional assistant coach of the year honors in 2001 and 2003.
2007-08 Review
SDSU finished the 2008 dual-match campaign with a 13-12 overall record and a 1-5 mark in the Mountain West Conference.
Last Time Out With The Aztecs
San Diego State split a weekend in Fresno as they fell to the Fresno State Bulldogs 6-1 on Feb. 27 but rebounded to defeat the Middle Tennessee Bule Raiders, 5-2, on Feb. 28. The Aztecs also competed in the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament, from March 5-8, with two teams making it to the round of 16 before being eliminated.
