San Diego State Opens Great Alaska Shootout Against Western Carolina on Thanksgiving Night
San Diego State (2-1) makes its second-ever trip to the state of the Alaska and its first since the 2005-06 season when it takes on Western Carolina (1-1) in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. AT/8:30 p.m. PT on Thanksgiving (Thursday, Nov. 27) at Sullivan Arena.
The Aztecs are coming off an impressive 80-56 home victory over Fresno State last Saturday, while the Catamounts come into the opening game of the tournament having last defeated Toccoa Falls, 120-62.
Game Tidbits:
* San Diego State is making its second trip to Alaska in four seasons after competing in the BP Top of the World Classic in 2005-06. SDSU took third place and later won the MWC regular season and tournament championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
* The Nov. 27 contest is the latest date the Aztecs have played a game away from San Diego since 2004-05 when they played at UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 4, 2005.
* Steve Fisher will be in search of his 150th victory as head coach of the Aztecs.
* The meeting with Western Carolina is just the second time San Diego State has met any of the current members of the Southern Conference. The last time SDSU faced a SoCon school was back on March 13, 1940, when the Aztecs defeated Appalachian State, 48-46, in a neutral site, NAIA Tournament game in Kansas City, Mo. San Diego State went on to the NAIA championship game before falling to Tarkio (Mo.) College, 52-42. SDSU became NAIA national champs in `40-41.
