SAN DIEGO -
San Diego State-UC San Diego Postgame Quotes in PDF Format
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher
Opening Statement:
"We played against a well-coached team. Chris Carlson did a wonderful job. The Tritons make you guard for 35 seconds. And I was very pleased with the way we guarded. We struggled to make baskets and that was obvious to anyone watching the game. Sometimes you're going to miss shots. I think as time went on we got a little anxious because we kept missing shots and then took shots a little early. We got better at that in the second half. Our size and athleticism wore them down a little bit."
On the number of offensive rebounds:
"When you miss as many shots as both teams missed, there are going to be a lot of rebounds to get. They had some on dribble penetration. Somebody helped and then nobody helped the next guy. They had a couple where we got pushed, when D.J. (Gay) got switched off on a bigger guy. We have to do a better job in everything."
On not calling timeouts in the first half:
"In hindsight, I probably meant to do that and let the guys play. We went eight minutes without a point. I know I yelled one timeout but it must have been a media timeout. You can't micromanage everything. I tried to make some substitutions in lieu of calling a timeout."
On Ryan Amoroso's back injury:
"Amoroso hurt his back weightlifting six months ago. He reaggravated it in the game against Point Loma on Tuesday. We're hopeful he will play Tuesday against Arizona State."
Senior forward Kyle Spain
On how Coach Fisher didn't take a timeout in the first half:
"That's the great thing about Coach Fisher. He likes to let his player freelance, but with freedom comes responsibility. For the most part we played pretty good defense, it was just that our shots weren't going down."
On not having many steals in the first half:
"We're not big on steals. We just want to force the opponent to turn the ball over. We would like to run a lot, with fast breaks and things like that. We're just not too big on steals."
On playing an actual opponent and not each other:
"Any game we play, it will be a definite learning experience. Getting tired of playing each other; it's a great experience to play against an opponent who is structured and disciplined."
Sophomore guard D.J. Gay
On upcoming opponent ASU:
"They're going to try and slow us down. They are a zone playing team, which makes it harder to run. We just have to stay focused and stay together. We have to push the ball when we can and try to get to that zone."
UC San Diego Head Coach Chris Carlson
On the game:
"I thought we handled the pressure really well for our first game against a team that is very well coached and very talented, and a team that I think is an NCAA Tournament level team."
On the problems that SDSU caused UCSD in the second half:
"Well, they out rebounded us in the second (half) and we turned the ball over. We had a few turnovers in the first half and twelve in the second. So they really ratcheted up the heat and we gave them a lot of chances for easy baskets that we didn't do in the first half."
