TULSA, Okla. - The San Diego State men's tennis duo of Bartosz Golas and Juan Gomez advanced to the second round of qualifying singles at the 2008 D'Novo Men's All-American Championship on Monday in Tulsa, Okla. Normally an outdoor event, inclement weather forced the tournament indoors but had no effect on either Aztec as both won in straight sets.
Golas, who was playing in his first match of the tournament, took on 29th-seeded Vijay Paul of Vanderbilt and cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 decision. The SDSU senior is now slated to face Jonathan Wong of Columbia at 11 a.m. CT on Tuesday.
Gomez, meanwhile, opened qualifying action against Baylor's Julian Bley after maneuvering through pre-qualifying singles. The junior won in straight sets, but the job was not easy as he emerged with a tough 7-6(5), 7-5(1) decision. Gomez moves to Tuesday's second round where he will meet 10th-seeded Mathieu Thibaudeau of Alabama at 8 a.m. CT.
In addition to each of their individual singles matches, the two will team up and participate in the qualifying doubles draw and will oppose seventh-seeded Kean Feeder and Clancy Shields of Boise State at 1:30 p.m. CT Tuesday afternoon.
