RALEIGH, N.C. - San Diego State's Maria Moreno-Pardo was awarded the Professional Promise Award for Region V, as announced by the National Association of Academic Advisors in Athletics (N4A). Moreno-Pardo serves as the full-time Learning Specialist for SDSU's Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS).

The Professional Promise Award is given yearly to one member from each of five regions. The award honors professionals who serve student-athletes and who have dedicated their energy to the Association and its mission. The candidates must be an N4A member for more than one year, but fewer than five years.

"I am privileged to even be nominated for this award," said Moreno-Pardo. "It is great to know that others believe I have professional promise in this field and I am honored that my colleagues from other institutions voted for me."

Moreno-Pardo joined San Diego State's SAASS in 2003 as a part-time academic mentor working with football. In the fall of 2005, she served as the academic advisor for the women's crew, women's water polo and men's soccer teams, before becoming the Learning Specialist in 2006. In her current capacity, Moreno-Pardo serves as the liaison between SDSU's Student Disability Services unit and the athletics department. She also provides weekly academic support for student-athletes with learning disabilities and those with temporary physical disabilities.

Moreno-Pardo competed on San Diego State's cross country and track teams from 1997-2001, while earning her bachelor's degree in social science with an emphasis in education. She went on to receive her teaching credential at SDSU in 2003 and is currently completing a master's degree.

Moreno-Pardo will be recognized at the 33rd annual N4A national convention that will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo., from June 6-9.
